Hey
My papy is looking to buy a new truck. Now when I say new I dont mean brand new. Were looking for a 2000 year dually, long bed, crew cab, and of course 4X4. I'd like to know what to look for when buying a used 7.3 one with 50,000 to 70,000.
Try and get a slightly older one that has forged rods not the powdered metal ones. The PM rods are fine if you have no plans to advance the power on the engine. But if you plan on upgrading the engine with guages, big exhaust, intake and finally a chip then the PM rods will fail. The forged rods were phased out, I think, about mid 2001. So get a 99.5 to early 2000 and you'll be safe. Check for the coolant additive with the test strips, and get service records. Check on CARFAX.com for accident repairs.
If possible get one that is bone stock, mods are great if done & used properly but there are a lot of people out there diving these things like race cars and you have to question how long they are going to last once they are done with them. Good luck.
