alt hook up

This is an 84 ranger was 2.3 now 2.8 and now something is not right i pull the neg cable and it dies and the alt was good before the swap. Plus i tried a dif alt and same thing. When i done the swap i added a msd 6a, msd coil, and new elec dist. The orange wire goes to a big plug that goes into the cab. The black does the same. And the red goes to the solenoid on top of the positive off the battery. I noticed my seatbelt light stays on now but kinda flickers and the door chime doesnt work so there is something wrong. If someone knows where the wires go exactly and if i can just skip the big plug and go direct i will run new wired off the alt unless thats not possible.

Pulling the battery cables with the engine running is never a good idea. It can create voltage spikes which can ruin your ignition box. Buy a voltmeter or take it to an autostore and get them to test the system. If you buy a voltmeter, put the meter on the battery terminals with the truck off. Then put the meter on the battery terminals with the truck running. If the running voltage is higher, then it is charging. Here's a basic diagram of the alt wiring if you have a factory amp guage.

The choke wire going to the "s" terminal is optional. If you do have a "Ford" electric choke then you can hook it up this way. The choke is automatically grounded through the metal on the carb. If you have an aftermarket electric choke, then it probably requires a full 12 volt signal, which you will have to get from the fuse box.
