It's the lift supports/struts. They are gas charged and will eventually fail. You can usually get them from any auto parts store. If they don't have them out on the floor ask the parts counter. Most places carry a good selection, but can order the ones you need.

My 86 Bronco II needed new ones. I picked them up at the junkyard. I found a hatch that would stay up and they were cheap. The parts store wanted something like $40 - $60 each I think. I used a broom handle for two years instead of buying new ones.
Some yards will pull the parts for you and charge a little more.
If you know you will have your truck for 10 more years, buy new, else I get used.
I do not buy used for emissions parts although.
