This was done on a national radio show to promote a book...it was with a puppy dog that wasn't even real, and people still called in complaining.

National Lampoon had a cover in '75 or '76 where a guy was holding a revolver to the head of a dog and the headline was "If you don't buy this magazine, we're going to kill this dog"

Obviously an attempt at dark and juvenile humor, but there were protests nonetheless....
