my 93 7.3 has been doing well. however when i went to crank this morning, it had a knocking sound. the sound did not go away. this in conjuction with white smoke i was wondering if i had a whole host of issues. the sound is like that of a gas engine without enough oil. i did check my oil and am OK. any imput?
I would be willing to throw money down that you either have an injector dfown, or and injector o-ring bad. Both will create a "knock" and blow the white. Have them pressure tested, or visablly ck for o-ring leaks. If you are holding oil pressure, it sounds like your problem
it sounds like a problem that i had: there was a bad injector and during accelaration i heard a knocking sound, and when the fuel system pumped more pressure as i was a accelarating, it would go away. did a simple injector test (while the motor's running, crack each fuel line nut on top of each injector one at a time-if it dosen't affect how it runs, it's bad), replaced the injector, and that was that.......
the belt where the water pump is located is frozen and the belt has siezed. a mechanic told me that the engine is gone, done, expired......what do i do now? if i need another engine how much do i expect to spend on a new one, a used and is a used one worth the risk and or money?
the mechanic told me that the truck had been running hot for some time and the piston was gone. he was not sure how many and which ones were gone.i have had it for 4 weeks (ebay).
one morning it did this, so i am really confused about this at this time.
I did a reman drop in complete engine, 7.3 turbo. Cost about 6600 dollars plus the install ( 850 dollars). It had a two year unlimited mileage warranty. 8 months later I am on my third engine, they have sent me 2 new motors and paid the install twice now.
I am wondering if I should have gone the junkyard motor, but they usually only have a 30 or 60 day warranty. And you never know what you have spent your money on. Over heated, run 20k on an oil change, run with no oil, no SCA's added to the coolant, had the crap run out of it, was it running while the last truck was upside down, way more miles than the odometer shows you just do not know.
I did do some checking in to salvaged motors....the price was in the 3000 to 3500 range for a 7.3 non turbo here in WV with around 100K on the engine.
That was way to many dollars to feel good about spending on a motor that only had a 60 day warranty for me with all the unknowns involved.
If I did it over again I would probably go the same route, the warranty is great to have.
i was thinking the same regarding spending that much money on something that is COMPLETLEY UNKNOWN (salvage). the truck i have has $7,000 worth of stuff on it (new radiator, new auto trans., undercoating, new carpet, new seat, etc., etc.) i even thought of parting ways with it by parting it out. i hate the thought of that.
i will keep you up to date and get your advice on this thread if that is OK with you.
the cheapest i found on the net was $3,900 for a rebuild. i have a friend who is attempting to get a motor from Ford here in Charlotte. he is a local carrier who has dealt with them for years. that seems to be my best option presently.
i was told by a mechanic that the belt siezed, making the engine run hot, in turn scoring a piston. if that is the case, can i replace just the piston in need or do i need a whole new motor, or something in between the two? i dont think he took the head off to see the piston, so i will have to do that to make sure of the problem.
the belt is wedged into where the water pump is located, and so i will at LEAST need a water pump, pulley, and anything else associated with it.
you could take the engine apart and have a machine shop look at it. Sometimes they can do one cylinder, but you may be causing a hot spot in the block. OR, they could hone the bad one out (if it is only one) and resleeve that hole. Why didnt you notice the temp guage ?
Keep an eye on your local auto trader for a cheap truck. I needed a 7.3 for my dump truck and was not in a big rush to get it running. Finally found a truck with a great running engine, got to test drive and then drive it home for only $1100.
