I have a '90 full size bronco and have always had a terrible time working on the wiring. Is there a special tool available to lift the retaining clips to pull apart wire connections without breaking the locking strap off at the bracket? Something has to work better than a screwdriver!
Over the years, the plastic plugs become brittle, and I am getting more and more connections with one strap broken off. Can the wires be removed from the broken connection and inserted into a new plug end? If so, how does the wire come out of the plug to put it in the new plug.
Any help will be appreciated.
I've watched the board for some time and enjoyed the Q & A's.
Dunno - I have several with NO clips left on my 1990! Luckily these things fit tight without the clips and I have not had any problems. If in doubt, wrap some electrical tape around it.
They are a major PITA for something that looks so simple.
Yes, the connector bodies can be replaced. The difficulty is the tool needed to remove the pins from the connector bodies. It is a specialty tool I have only seen in catalogues like Terminal Supply and similar specialty electrical and tool supply outlets. Many connectors with spade terminal connections inside can be disassembled using a very small screwdriver and releasing the retaining tab on each of the terminals through the back of the connector. The connector bodies are available through Ford and Terminal Supply etc..
