Changing axle oil

OK, I want to change the oil in my front and rear axles. I get under there and can't find a drain plug! Tell me I don't have to pull the housings apart to do this...

99 4.0 4X4 5 spd.

well, it can be done without pulling the cover, take a small hand pump with a hose (i like to use a boat primer bulb with two sections of 4 ft hose) put one end into the fill hole 'till you get to the bottom and the other end in a jug (a empty milk jug or windsheild wash jug works well) and pump it out that way, you'll get moast of it out and if you warm the diff up first by driving it a few miles, most dirt if any preasent will be in suspension. although if you have submerged the unit(s) in water you may want to go ahead and pull it apart. but im just assuming you want to change it for good measure (p.m.) Dave.

make sure when you are refilling the diff's that the lube you use has a friction inhibitor in it or buy it seperately or your diff's will pop and bind up. ford's are bad about this.

I don't have a 4x4, but the rear axle should be a breeze. Pop the diff cover, let it drain, flush and clean the inside, replace the gasket and/or RTV, torque to spec, refill from the fill hole near the U-joints. No sweat. I would have to look at one of the manuals to see what the front is like.
