your main concern should be to protect the metal on the floor boards, i would definately suggest using all the herculiner on the floorboards and then just placing the mats in there for easy, quick clean up. It seams you are more interested in durability and hosability (again the crappy made up word) than you are about heat and sound. be careful with the firewall and the seam by the firewall and toe boards. also, be careful with the weather strip steel b/c it easily rusts out. it sounds cool (no pun intended) and good luck.
no no i was saying not to use insulation at all. The insulation used normally for automotive applications is much like carpet padding. The firewall also has this really think padding that is backed with a rubber mat. I was suggesting just putting lots of layers of bed liner right onto the floorboards and using lots of it around seams and the door jam. Then put down some rubber mats on top, mats that would catch sand and whatnot, that way you can quickly get rid of dirt and sand and whatnot as you offroad. The removeable mats can just be pulled out and shook out. If you put the insulation down first and bedline over it, the bedliner will crack as the insulation compresses and decompresses from your feet and from just climbing in. The insulation tends to be a bit squishy, kinda like floor carpet padding.
I didn't think it would crack, it should be waranteed against cracking, atleast I would think so. I see what your saying though, thats not a bad idea. If I'm going to do that though, I might just get some nice floor mats to use day to day.
I was actualy worried about insulating from the heat and sound when I wasn't wheeling it, and then the hoseablilty of it when I was. I dont suppose worried would be the right word, maybe just trying to find a happy middle ground. I think this carpet thing will probably solve my problem...
it is warrenteed against cracking, however it's not exactly meant to be used on carpet insulation. what you could do is get one of those mats that cover just the front and adhere the padding to the bottom of the mat and then just remove it before wheelin'. that's prolly my best idea yet. leme know what you think.
I put it on wood once and it popped up in a week. I would try something under the truck, a good under coating then a white or light color paint after that to reflect the heat. Then coat the inside.
Is it supposed to be used on wood? And was it herculiner, or a cheap knock-off?
The problem with going under the truck, is I dont want to have to pull the underneath of the truck out (if you get what I'm saying). Wouldn't I have to take stuff like axels and the driveline out to get to it?
and I also don't feel like pulling the body, that would be way too much trouble.
It was Hurculiner and NO it is not supposed to be on wood but I figured I would try it. The point is it is not flexable once it is on even though it seams it would be any bending and it cracks.
You don't need to pull the body to undercoat the truck, there are many companies that will spray it on for cheap.
I used Just cheap walmart spray bedliner on the underbody and it worked awesome. I've had the truck out for about a year and there are no signs of chipping, and my buddy has had it in the bed of his truck for two years with no chipping. That would be an excellent way to protect your underbody. What do you think about the removable liner for the cab????
I thought about the removable liner for the cab, but I'm afraid of the rust... granted I do live in phoenix arizona... and the truck doesn't have a spot of rust on it... I dont want to screw that up :-\
I wanted something that I could put in and perminantly not have to worry about it. I'm afraid with a liner I would end up pulling it every few months to see if there's anything happening underneath it.
Right now I think I'm going to end up just putting it down with no insultion. I'm going to check into the under lining thing... about how much should a company charge me to do that? It's a bronco II (or you could consider it a shortbed ranger in that case.)
Hey.... That's what i said. put down the Hurculiner on the floor boards and then put the partial mat down on the front with insulation attached/glued to the bottom of the partial mat. That would give some insulation and sound proofing for everyday driving. JCWhitney and other companies sell a mat that covers the drivers and passengers floor boards as well as the trans tunnel as one big mat. Just attach the insulation to the bottom of this mat and put it in for daily driving and whatnot then remove it to hose out the floor boards.
haha but good marketing is the key. i guess the whole "posting guru" title trumps my "junior user" title. i should just go post a bunch of crap to boost my level, oh wait, that's what this it....
