scary situation

I was driving on dry pavement and there was a sudden "clunk clunk" right under the front seats of my 94. At first I thought the transmission was falling out, but I kept o without any more problems. After I got home I put it in 4Hi and 4Lo. After switching out of 4Lo it would not move. I had to completely exit out of 4WD before the transmission would function. Is this normal? Any ideas about the loud "clunk"? It has 179000 miles and I have never had a 4WD vehicle before. Any suggestions?

Is it an Electrical or Manual Transfer Case?
If it's manual and you placed it on Neutral, the Transmission gears will not move your vehicle. Which would be great as a security measure for thiefs who don't know about 4x4.

The electronic Borg-Warner 1356 transfer case does not have a "neutral" position. Sounds like perhaps the shift motor is out of alignment but that still doesn't explain the complete loss of power to the rear axle. The drive line through the T-case is uninterrupted to the rear axle at all times unless the transmission is in neutral. Kinda befuddled here as to what may have happened. I assume it drives in 2WD just fine?

YES SIR. IT SEEMS TO DO FINE. THERE IS NO NOISE OR VIBRATION. EVEN IN 4WD IT DOES FINE. THIS PROBLEM OCCURRED JUST WHEN I TOOK IT OUT OF 4LO AND LEFT IT IN 4HI. IF I COMPLETELY TAKE IT OUT OF 4WD DRIVE THERE SEEMS TO BE NO PROBLEM. THAT IS WHY I WAS WONDERING IF I WAS EVEN DOING IT RIGHT, ie DO YOU HAVE TO EXIT OUT OF 4WD COMPLETELY WHEN COMING OUT OF 4LO?
