A4LD Hearvy Clunk Going Cold into Reverse
This is on a 1992 Aerostar 3.0 with A4LD (I believe that is the one) with 104,000 miles. Tranny fluid changes (pan drop and filter) were done at 43000, 65000, 83000, and 103000 miles. Then at 103500 I drained and refilled the pan (had drain plug installed last time). Each change was probably about 4 quarts of a 9.7 qt system and the last time, since I effectivly did it twice, probably got 6 qts or more fresh fluid. Fluid looks great. Tranny works great other than the cold reverse clunk. Once you run it a bit, reverse is not so bad. Also, when cold if you first go into drive (no clunk) then reverse it is not so bad, but still too much of a clunk. Does it even when cold start rpms are dropped below 1000 rpm. Will this clunk destroy the tranny or should I just ignore/live with it? Is there an easy fix (external adjustment maybe)?
