1991 explorer manual trans removal problem

Question 1991 explorer manual trans removal problem

can only seperate trans and engine about 1 inch. seems like something is
keeping it from seperating. any ideas on what i am doing wrong. driveshafts
are disconnected.

Have you removed your exhaust pipes yet? They have to be removed or the tranny won't come out. Mine would only move back a couple of inches, then it would hit the firewall and the pipe. I cut a 6-8 inch piece out of my pipe, then the trans came out easy. If you aren't back far enough to be hitting the firewall, try GENTLY prying on it, its probably hanging up on the alignment pins. Make sure the hose from the master cylinder to the slave cylinder is disconnected as well.

Yes, there is a lip on the firewall that hangs down you might be caught on. Dumb question here, did you remove the shifter from inside? You may have to tilt the front of the motor up so the rear of it goes downward to give you clearance needed to get the input shaft out of the flexplate. I have had to on many occasions, bend that lip on the firewall back with a large prybar. Good luck!
