Power Steering Pump Question

Hello folks,

This is rather embarrasing but here it goes...

I removed my power steering pump from my 91 Ford Explorer 4.0L 4WD because of a small leak. I could not determine exactly where the leak was so decided to pull everything apart, inspect and re-assemble with new seals, pressure and return lines etc.

When I removed the coupling on the pump where the pressure line attaches to the pumps resevoir a small round part (tapered slightly) slid out of the pump resevior and I don't know which way to re-install this little fella. It is about an inch long with one flat side (stamped with an "A") and the other end is shaped like a nipple with a screen mesh (filter?) in the tip.

Any ideas? I couldn't find anything on the net or in these forums.

Thanks,

Gil

If the screen is bowed out one way or the other, I would guess that which ever direction is bowed out would be the direction of the flow of the fluid. If not, and it will fit either way, then I have no idea.

Where did you get the new seals, etc? I would do mine also. Thanks.

Thanks for that. Doesn't sound too hard.

My thanks to Racerguy...a picture is indeed worth 1000 words.

For Golfmore... I have yet to purchase the parts and seals. I spent most of the day trying to solve my little part mystery. I will do the rebuild today. I would suggest buying a Haynes Manual (if you don't already have one) as the chapter on steering explains the installations.

Thanks again,

Gil
