heat shield for starter?

i recently developed an oil leak at the oil pan gasket which would normaly be nothing too strange but heres the situation. after removing the starter to verify that the leak was coming from that location on gasket. i noticed that there is an indent or notch in the block where it meets the oil pan and above the notch are 2 holes one above the other i diddnt check to see if they are threded but im wondering if there is supposed to be a heat shield between the starter and the block ? or does anyone know whats supposed to go there? im thinking its a weak spot in the gasket seeing as how thats where my leak is. this gasket isnt that old and its a felpro rubber one id hate to replace this and have it happen again. id apreciate any input on this subject.
