Belt Misalignment
I have a 1988 Bronco II with a 2.9 liter 5 speed standard that tossed the alternator and power sterring belts the other day. I bought 2 new belts, installed them and watched as the alternator belt flipped over. One more rev on the engine and both belts jumped off again. Reinstalled again and managed to slowly nurse the truck home, ( about 30 miles and 4 times putting on belts) After reinstalling them again I took a careful look at the alignment. It appears the harmonic balancer and the water pump pulleys are out of alignment by about 1/2 to 3/4 inch. I have had the truck since January with no belt problems. No vibrations. No leaks around water pump or front seal. Both pulleys seem to be tight although I haven't had a chance to remove them to check the shafts. Has anyone else had any problems with one of these pulleys moving? Also I believe the motor on this truck was previously taken from a Ford Ranger and installed in the Bronco.
