i have 3.07 gears in the rear, of my 77F-100 2wd, and that just ant goin to cut it so i'm thinkin of puttin 3.73 gears an locking it up b/c i have some 28in. tires and they are still farley new but when they wear out then i want some 31in. swamper LTB's tires an i'll be i the mud a good bit, but it will still be a daily driver, so would it be better to have 3.54 gears or what. Because i still want it to perform good but i would also like the gas milage to be good also. Thankz for any responses
What engine/tranny combo do you have? I have a 77 4x4 with a 300/435 and 3.50 gearing. I stepped up to 31" tires and it had little effect on the perfomance, if anything it brought my rpms down a little bit, but not much. If I were to go to any size bigger (tires) i would cerntainly step up the gear ratio.
3.73's will be low for the 28's but will be perfect for the 31's. I have a 302/3-speed and 3.50 gears in my '69 Bronco with 31" tires and the 3.50's are a little too high. 3.73's would be just right.
