ok.. I know a C4 or C6 on sight, but I've never messed with any of the automatic overdrives. I have an automatic that came out of a 1985 F150 5.0. I know it's an overdrive, but no clue which one. It has a small electrical connection on the driver's side that has about 4 or 5 pins in a circle facing up. The cooler lines are close together on the passenger side close to the front of the tranny. I think it has a kick down lever, but I know it doesn't have any cable. I need to know what tranny this is, and what the electrical connections are for.
I think what you are describing sounds like an AOD with an electronic overdrive. It may not even have a kickdown cable or rod. I hate these transmissions and have only heard bad things. I'ld take it to the scrap yard as the case is made of alluminum and is worth some money...
Well, I'm kinda in a pinch. I just purchaced an '88 mustang that looks like somebody's race car project gone wrong. They've replaced the engine with what they said was a police engine. I have no clue on that. But the removed the EFI and went with a carb. And replace the original tranny with a C4. Only problem is that I have no high gear. Looking through all of my old C4 literature, I can find no explanation as to why everything on the tranny would work except high. I just happened to have this overdrive from my old truck (we pulled the 302/automatic, and replaced with a 429/ZF-5, 2.23:1 rear) I know the tranny worked when we pulled it. I also know the selector on it only had 3 forward positions. L, D and OD. The mustang selector has 4 foward positions 1, 2, D, OD
The AOD is not an electronic tranny. If you're sure the tranny is an overdrive box, then it pretty much has to be an AOD. The C4 and the C6 are not overdrive boxes.
Well, I don't know. Sorry, it got too complex for my knowledge. Check out this page, it may be of assistance. I'm lookin it up in the old shop manuals I have, but no promises. I'll post a reply if I find something. Good luck.
