My 88 Bronco has developed problems starting. 2.9L V-6, EFI fuel injection, TFI ignition. Sometimes it cranks and runs OK with high idle (1600 rpm), other times it won't start at all. During no start, it acts like the ignition timing is moving around on it's own, as it will pull the starter down for a second (kinda wa-wawa-wawawa...) and sometimes spit back thru the intake, but will not crank. I can come back later and it may crank and run good or refuse to start again. My fuel pressure is good and the coil does fire when this is happening, but I don't think in the proper order. What determines the timing and fuel injector sequence on this engine. I'm a experienced mechanic, but I'm new to Ford Bronco's.
Thanks in advance for your input
I had the same problem and it turned out to be a 20 cent shear pin that holds the gear in place at the end of the shaft of the distributor. If this pin is sheared your timing will basically move around at will... I checked everything but the pin when I did mine, asked a mechanic friend and he mentioned the pin, tada!
Good luck,
Keiser
