my sons truck is alittle slow to crank after it has been driven awhile,I suspect that the timing is off.It has a 390 (not original). need to know which cyl. is no. 1 and what should timing be set on? sign, nottamechanic!

Standing at the front of the truck looking into the engine compartment, number 1 is on your left and closest to you.
Initial timing should be 6-12 BTDC. More advance will generally help with power and mileage. Too much advance will kick back on the starter. If it's just a hot start problem, I'd look at the cables and connections. Clean all connections and replace any suspect cables.
