Question better cold start and warm-up

I have a 67 f-100 with a rebuilt 360. currently points and stock starter/fuel pump..etc. I want better cold starts and quicker warm-ups. winters are about 6 months long here and the cold starts are already getting rough (40 deg. in the morning). also, there is a little hesitation while driving for the first 10 min. or so. I've heard that swapping to electric dist. would solve many problems, or high performance electric fuel pump and starter. I need some help, all I do is customize em, I have no experience with the engines. Any help is greatly appreciated.

What oil you runnin? I would try some 5-20. Also, try playing with the air/fuel mixture screws. They are loacted on the bottom of the carb in front. Theres two of them, one for the right bank of cylinders, and one for the left bank of cylinders. Youll proably want to richien the mixture. Also make sure spark plugs are new and spark plug wires are in good consition. If you want to spend the extra money go with a petonix system, however you may just want to get a set of points and cap for a couple bucks.. Also get a timing light and make sure its at or near specs. With a new set of points, a little richer of a mixture, and new spark plugs, it should be starting quite nicely.

sounds like simple adjustments...i don't know the first thing about setting the timing, but i can figure it out...switching everything over to electronic seemed a little too expensive....spend a few hours on it and maybe i can learn a few about this thing....thanx

Thats not good. If its a newly rebuilt engine and its burning oil something was improperly done when the engine was assembled. Who rebuilt it, you or a machine shop? Can you see the smoke when its running?

no smoke at all when running.....once it warms up after 10 min. or so, it runs like new, very strong and quick responding. I think my lead foot burns the oil, the engine has about 4k on rebuild. There is a little blue smoke on start, but just for a second, otherwise seems healthy. I am a circle track racer, so my lead foot naturally carries over to my daily drivers too.

Trust me... spend the bucks on the Pertronix and hot coil, 8mm plug wires and titanium plugs. Faster starts, smoother running, better mileage. But go back to whoever rebuilt that motor and find out why it's burning (or losing?) oil... not good.

previous owner built it himself, about the 20th 360 he's done, so i assumed it was done right....i bought the truck for 800 bucks and it runs like a champ, sanded and primed--ready for paint, good chrome and glass. seemed like a hell of a deal.

Crawl under it... they came from the factory with a leak, keeps the underside from rusting... if it's leaking you'll know pretty quick.
You got a good deal... post some pics in your gallery when you get a chance, we love to look at pics.
