manuel 4x4 transfer case vs shift on fly dash switch
just put my order in for new 05 4x4 350.They could not find one with floor transfer case shift w auto trans.I called almost every dealer northern calif. They had lots of 05 sd diesl 4x4 auto but all had shift on fly dash switch.Doesnt any one like the reliability of a manuel tranfer case?.When you really need 4wd manuel hubs and case are the only way to go.I dont want to trust wire or fuse to put me in 4wd
Yes the auto hubs Ford used in the 90's were POS's. They never engaged/disengaged properly. My PSD already had manual locking hubs on it when I bought it. Thank God.
I agree with Matt that nothing beats a transfer case shifter! I couldn't find one when I bought my 2004. I have already driven around in 4wd by accident until I noticed that my gas was being used at an alarming rate and I saw 4x4 in my instrument panel. I figured my 3 year son turned the dial. Just something I'll have to be more conscious of.
My F250 has the manual shift and hubs, I prefer it for my needs. I tend to be in out or out of 4WD for miles at a time.
The shift on-the-fly hubs work well for the most part. They are great for working in and out of the muck. The biggest problem is making sure the vac lines to the hubs are intact. Broken hoses will not lock hubs but will let in lots of water in to ruin your expensive bearings.
The 2nd main problem is driver error. 90% of the drivers get stuck, then shift into 4WD. Too late. The auto hubs need to rotate to engauge. If you're not moving, you're not moving.
I have to agree with Matt, I don't want to depend on electric transfer into 4WD either. Just one less thing to worry about. (having a manual transfer lever). When I got my '04 f350 CC I got the last 6 speed manual w/manual t/axle shift between New York City, Minneapolis , Atlanta and the Virginia's. I consider myself very lucky.
Go with the lever and the hubs ! I like the lever much better,,why just today I put the transfere case in low,,with hubs unlocked to backup my fully loaded trailer uphill
( 2-wheel low range) no bucking cause it was not in 4x4 on dry dirt either,,,works great, cant do that with ESOF or these other 4x4 systems !
I used to own a 2000 F250 Super cab and I had to order it with the automatic and the manual transfer case. I loved it and never had any problems with it. I now own an 03 F250 Crew cab and I again had to order it with the automatic and manual transfer case. I don't think I would ever get the shift on the fly, I have some buddies that had problems with theirs, but my parents have an 03 KR with the shift on the fly and have never had a problem, but they really don't use the 4X4 that often either.
i took me three months to find the truck i wanted with the options i wanted WITH the manual on the floor 4x4 lever..... that was the hardest option to come by...

I looked all over to for what I wanted. I finallly had to order mine because there where none around that had maual shift 4x4 or 6 speed manual tranny. I got everything that I wanted, but it amazes me out how many people thought I was crazy for going that route (with the manual shifters). Well I figure its my truck and I've never cared what other people thought, but it was funny how many told me
Matt, I have a 2004 F250 with auto transmission, manual transfer case, and manual locking hubs. Stop looking and compromising. Order the truck you want. Philip.
Dealer called yesterday and my 04 250 just arrived. Auto, manual case,SC, XL package. Did a search last week and found one up near Albany, NY. Picking it up on Saturday. Didn't need all the bells and whistles with the XLT. Just my preference, the simpler the better.
