I have a 1999 Ranger that needs the cooling system flushed and would like to know what came in the Cooling System the Green Anti Freeze or the Red Anti Freeze. What is in there now who knows. You cannot tell what color it is.
Would you Flush it yourself or would you have a Pro do it?
If Green was in it could you put Red back into it or the other way around?
I would say I would use Prestone Super Flush in it and do what it said.
Would you run another can of Super Flush throught it to make sure it is complately clean or is this a wast of money?
What should I do to make it ready for Winter? Like replace hoses and what else.
Go to or call your local parts store. They can tell you what the OEM recommended antifreeze is. There are several ways to flush your radiator, chemically and mechanically. If you take it to a shop, you will pay somewhere in the neighborhood of $50, but they will flush it with water pressure, and/or a chemical flush. You can do something like that with a garden hose, but it is not quite as effective. Make sure that you use the recommended mix of anitfreeze and water, or buy pre-mixed when you go to refill it. Check all of your coolant hoses for wear or signs of dry rot, and check the serpentine belt also. The general rule of thumb for a serp belt is no more than 10 cracks in an inch on the inside of the belt where it stretches over a pulley. When you refill your antifreeze, start the engine with radiator cap off, and keep the fluid filled as the engine runs for a few minutes, then make sure the burp tank is full. you will need to check the burp tank occasionally for the next week or so after doing the service, as the system gets air pockets in it when you empty and refill it.
