95 explorer

My buddy has a 95' explorer, and he comes to me with most of his auto questions. The other day he noticed something hanging from the bottom of the truck, so he asked me. I checked and found an approximately 3/8" hose that ran to the top of the front diff. It attached at the top of the diff onto a rigid steel line that was about 2 1/2" long. The opposite end of the hose had a plastic fitting? on it. I honestly didn't know what it was, or what it did, so I zip tied it to the frame out of the way. His 4wd still engages, and he doesn't have any warning lights on. Any thoughts?

Breather vent for axle. Should have some kind of fitting to keep crud out, and be mounted high enough to keep water out.

Methinks.

That sounds right. The fitting looked pretty funky, but it fits the description. I gues where I mounted it can be its new permanent home, since it's out of the way and high enough. Thanks!!!

I moved the end of the hose up the firewall some to make sure it wouldn't suck water. I don't think there is much real danger, since my friend's truck has never, and probably will never see any mud that is not on top of pavement. Thanks!!!
