Dumb Mistake

I just dropped a 400 into my 77' f150. Got everything hooked up, without any more problems than normal. I had to put a larger bell housing on the manual tranny to fit the 400. (had a 351m before...I think, but that's a different thread.) Anyways, when I went to bolt the starter up, I realized that now it wouldn't come anywhere near the teeth on the flex plate because I used the old one from the 351m that came out of the truck. The flywheel is about an inch too small in diameter for the starter to work. Am I going to have to drop the tranny and replace the flywheel, or is there another way around this problem? I feel really stupid for making this kind of mistake, but now it's done.

The 351M and 400 are the same externally. You must have had a 351W before. You will need to drop the tranny and check all of your parts for fitment. You will need a flywheel. You don't use a flex plate with a manual transmission.

Check. Everything else fit, except for having to do some creative mounting for the clutch linkage. So I can't run the smaller flex plate. I guess I need to put my hands on one. This one hurts though. I was ready to start the thing tomorrow when I finished the wiring.

Correction on my last post...flywheel. I don't know where that one came from, it's been a long day.
