whats up people i am getting loaded up to head down to the river today and i notice my left front tire is leaning in at the top pretty bad ( i saw this when i was working on the rear end this week but i assumed it was because of the way it was sitting on the jack stands) now it is level and it still leans in at the top.... i don.t want to wear out my tires...
but anyway does anyone know how to fix a tilt"??????? aka frontend problems..........
i know very little about front ends.. i know ball joints, tyerods ,drag links exist but i don't have a clue on how to check em for wear( it all loks greasie and wore to me )or how to adjust them or which part pulls the bottom in or pushes the top out any help will be appreciated ...........
i m going to drive it and see what happens
thanx again for the help on the rear end i feel like i am on my way to becoming a B2 jedi master......
Jack up that corner and see if you have play in the wheel, then you can narrow it down a bit, does that corner sit lower? could be a weak spring if the joints are ok.
ok took her for a roll and she is wondering all over the road... I noticed this before but i thunked i had a low tire all ( i recently had to get a patch from a nail, and it felt the same way...) the tires have the right pressure and are fairly new...feels like there is a little more play than usual .....she sits level all the way round the springs and shocks look normal....my truck use to leak at the valve covers bad so everthing that i have not worked on is greasie and muddy.....so all the rods and stuff up front are grimime but everthing looks like it not falling off.....i guess i will postpone my trip til i figure this out... I am going out to jack er up and check for play on that side....... be back soon
cowboy ninja i'm glad i jacked up that left corner...i jacked her up and everything just sorta drooped down as soon as the wheel came off the ground...i gave it a jiggle and it wobbled all over so i pulled thewheel and the hub and my wheel bearing is ate up bad.. like parts of it are seperated and missing worse that i have ever saw....it looks like the brake is all that is holding it on... soooooo i am off to get some bearings.....maybe after this weekend i can count on the axles and wheels not flying off.....damn i am being attacked by gremlins or something........
does anyone have any knowledge as to replacing these bearings are they the press on type or what.....i guess no matter what i am going to drop some coin on this little beast this weekend....
If the bearings were that bad be sure to replace the race in the rotor, I have used a long punch to knock them out then tap the new ones in place, be sure not to mar the new race or bye bye new bearing

i called auto zone and asked about the front bearing yhey are only 10;999 but the guy i spoke to had no idea how to put em on ....info anyone????do ya just tap em in?????the front spindle looks ok ...anything else i should check while i got the hubs off??????
just line up everything as you take it apart and put it back together in the order it came off..make sure to pack the bearing good..you'll need a grease seal also..have to remove the old one to get the outter bearing out. I just did all mine last week..it's not that hard..get a haynes or chilton manual to help you along the way.
After I remove, clean, repack and reinstall front bearings, how do I set the freepaly? Back on my old VW bugs you just tighten them till the top/bottom click/clack feeling goes away when you push/pull the tire.

How much wiggle should there be on a BII 4x4?
Or should I crank them down tight?
If tight...what torque?
No do not crank it down, no there is no torque spec.
Tighten the nut while you spin the hub with your other hand to seat the bearings in the raceways, it will get stiff to turn. Then back off the nut 1/4 to 1/2 turn. You want it to have just the smallest amount of free play. So little you can just feel it but barely. This allows for some expansion as the bearings warms up, not to much now. It won't get very hot if you have it right so it needs very little space.
If it gets hot you have it to tight, back it off a little more. You should be able to hold your hand on the hub comfortably after driving it a few miles. Warm to the touch yea, but not burn you. Do not touch the rotor surface, it will be hot.
tells the torque of the front bearings while spinning the wheel, also, if the retainer ring is like mione on the 87 4x4, then the socket is the same as a 1/2 ton chevy/gmc retainer ring socket.
Thanks for the freeplay adjust tips. Drove the old beast to work today and it worked fine. Sort of pulls to the left when braking though. SUspect sticking caliper to go with new rotors and pads.
