In my 1984 bronco my rear window will not go down. I have not used the truck in a few weeks and the last time I did it worked fine. I checked fuses and they all looked good. I am not sure where to start looking now. Plus how can I try to work on anything if I can't get the window down to open the tailgate. Any help would be great.
From inside the truck, pull the tail gate access panel and you can access the window motor. You should check for power at the plug where it connects to the motor harness. If you get power, It could be the motor. I have had to do this more than once on several of my broncos, I've owned every model except for the original small one. Alot of times, I pull the motor to check it and it is operational. I reinstall it and it works again with no problems. This is pretty common on all body styles.
jumping the motor is the best first step. But my experience is that more often than not it's the dash switch that is bad. Usually run around $20 at the dealer. Lot of vendors recomend going straight to the electrical harness in the tailgate. Way more difficult and expensive and not usually the problem.
The switch is usually the problem. Sometimes, the window may move in one direction only, up or down. This happened to me and I thought it was in the harness. It turns out that the switch was bad and would operate in one direction but would not return to the correct position to make contact that would allow the window to move in the other direction. This caused a lot of unnecessary work on my part tearing everything apart only to find that the switch was the problem and would have taken about 15 minutes to replace.
