Anti-Lock Problems
Hopefully someone with more experience can help me out. I just bought an '88 F-150 4wd, it has a six and a five speed. I got a "deal" on it because the rear axle was shot. I found a donor and replaced it, same year and type of truck. Now, I can't get the brakes to work right. Even after replacing the master cylinder they are mushy. I bled them several times, then I found the bleeder on the anti-lock valve and bled them all over again, twice. There are no leaks. I replaced all the front lines and the previous owner had replaced the rear lines.
Someone suggested bypassing the anti-lock valve to see if that was the cause. I did, it was. With the valve out of the system the brakes work fine, although there is a tendancy to lock the rears.
I'm wondering if I can leave the valve bypassed and install an adjustable proportioning valve. This isn't a nice truck, just a driver. I'm too busy with my '75 one ton project to care if this truck is perfect, but safe and drivable would be nice. Will the vale being bypassed effect the engine computer? Thanks for the help folks, Ogre.
