Question '97 Expedition for Towing

Well, I think I gave up on the Explorer for Towing a 23' Vacation Trailer with a loaded weight of 5000 lbs. After reading the forum topics this probably isn't the truck to be used.

I am now looking at a 1997 FORD EXPEDITION EDDIE BAUER EDITION, 4dr, 134000kms, Maroon, Automatic, 4x4, 5.4L, 8Cyl, Gas. . .

Can I have some feedback on this unit for Towing our Family Vacation Trailer. . .Does everyone feel this Expedition will do the trick. We will be using it for long trips through some mountains etc.c.c and I want to be able to keep up with the traffic (on hills as well). I also don't want swaying or concerns when semis pass me going to opposite direction.

Any help would be great.

Thnx
millcreek

millcreek, I have a 2000 EB with 5.4 engine and 3:55 rear. I tow a 4500lb loaded Sunline Travel Trailer. The expedition does great. The 3:73 rear would be better but I have been in the mountains twice this year and on some very long steep grades and I was impressed. it did really good. You'll be fineBrian

I use my 97 5.4 XLT to tow my race car and the Expedition handles great.

The trailer/car weight is about 5,000 lbs.

i used our 1997 expy eddie baurer 4x4 with the 5.4 to pull our 30foot shasta camper and the only time that i had a slight bit of problem was when i took off from a dead stop and had to start going up a really big hill and she just didn't get above 35mph but it was a really big hill. i always towed it with o.d. off no matter it was straight rd or hills. good luck with it

I have a 5.4 4X4 with 3.73 and the tow package. I have towed a lot of different things behind it from a travel trailer to a 65 Buick Wildcat on a trailer to u-hauls and flat bed trailers with out any problems what so ever. Pulling down I-65 between Nashville and Chatanoga never even slowed down pulling the mountins. Very happy with the power. Now if I could only find a bigger fuel tank for it.

I agree w/ the others. X's are fine for towing campers. I tow a heavy old 20' hardtop camper and the X does great. As far as the sway... If you have a sway-bar with your weight distributing bar setup you'll be fine. I've towed a lot this year on the highway passing and being passed by semi's w/really no sway trouble from their wind-wash. You probably also already know, but if your trailer starts to sway engage the trailer brakes slightly via the brake controller and it should draw back in line with the tow vehicle. Happy Campin'! Dave
