spotlighting?

Is it legal in anyoine elses area to spotlight coyotes and other varmints like pocupines and rockchucks? We went last night, and had a blast. We figured someting new out too, if you take a red dry-erase marker and color your lens red, the coyotes will stare at it for a longer period of time, and also they will run in the light instead of running away from it instantly.

Where I'm at, I just wish we could spotlight gang bangers and graffiti vandals.

I know, not very nice thing to say.....

What, do you have a surplus of coyotes? As long as they are eating rats and stuff, great. They used to get too numerous and go after the cows when the were calving...not a pretty sight.

I went out at dawn a few times, but I made so much noise and could be seen the whole way in the open fields, so I never got one.

Almost got one with the Ford tractor, though.....

lots and lots

Yeah, we have alot of coyotes hanging around out this way, there used to be a bounty on them, but now its just a year-round season and you can use pretty much any method you wish to hunt them (even hounds, whihc is illegal for everythign else in this state) these law/rules only apply to 2 or 3 counties statewide though, so I guess I sm just lucky enough to live in one those 3

You're propably OK as long as you don't have a gun with you, then you could be considered hunting and that's illegal at night in most States. In Pennsylvania spotlighting is allowed unless during deer season but if "the man" finds a gun in your truck, the gun, truck and all can be confiscated. I suggest you check with your Game Commission. It's easy for us to give opinions but we don't have to pay your fine. .......... JMO..

deer season

Yep, the only time of year we don't spotlight is when the special Desert Unit hunt is going for all the bowhunters and a few rifle hunters, I don't need to be getting a fine or losing my truck and guns over something like that

I dont care for spotlighting. Its like fishing an aquarium. Not near as bad as sittin in a tree stand with a feeder below you and shooting deer while they eat. Hogs......yea....spotlighting them......at least their not natural around here. Four legged Coyotes are a natural part of things. Unless out of control......I think they should be left alone. I know, I sound like a hippie.
We have several four legged coyotes around here. Some say they get peoples little dogs off porches sometimes. Well, its the country...dont let your little dog run loose all night. Just as well could have been an owl. That leaves em stumped. I havent had problems yet with coyotes......cows usually run em off......they go for the afterbirth, but most never the calf.......thats a big mother to have chasin little coyotes.

My brother and I have hunted coyotes for the last 35 years by spotlighting. The biggest mistake most folks make is buying far too much candlepower. We have always used the Q Beam 200,000 Cp lite. When the guy running the light spots a yote, drop the light in front of the yote and you can still see his eyes from the reflection off of the ground. When the shooter is ready, move the light up. We have scored in the thousands over the years. He is now a gov't trapper, your tax dollars at work, so I get to do it legally in Texas as long as I am with him.

I pretty sure it's illegal in PA to spot after midnight. Atleast it used to be.

Here in SD, it is legal for a landowner or occupiant to spotlight for any kind of varmint. One guest is also allowed with the owner. A shotgun or a rimfire rifle can be used. Vehicle laws do not apply to varmints.

I think that spotlighting is very fun. The only problem is that I rarely go. The last time that I went, my friend and I got a badger and about 6 coons. I prefer a sawed-off shotgun, so it is easy to fire from the window. A .22 is also handy for longer shots when the pickup is stopped.
