What is a dashpot?

The 2100 model carb on my 72 F100 doesn't have a dashpot. I bought a junkyard carb to reubild so I could have a spare and it has a dashpot. What purpose does a dashpot serve and should I get this on my truck ASAP? It doesn't look like it has a purpose. It is spring loaded but it doesn't have any vacuum lines or electrical connectors to it.

Thanks for the link. Now it makes sense. It does serve a purpose. Its just not much of a purpose.
