ok, my heads are apart, i didnt take them apart the people that hot tanked everyhting did so i didnt see how they go back together lol not to smart on my part. but now i cant figure out how to put them back togehter. can any one help with a pic or sumthing, there 92 351w, stock heads with the rockers on a rail, if you need any more info i help you with all i can,
nope, i looked threw autozone.com for an hour or so and couldnt finda thing, if some one that has taken the valves apartbefor could tell me all the parts and there locations i would prolly be able to figure it out.
I rebuilt the heads on my 84 351w. I have a picture of them complete, but basically it goes like this.
1. insert valve through head.
2. put on valve stem seal, spring, retainer, then collets. You'll need to compress the spring here.
3. Next, at least on mine was the order of the rocker and assorted parts. it goes (I don't know all the correct names, but rail, then rocker, then the rocker pivots? ( I don't know if that is what they are called, but it is what the rocker is pressed against and pivots on.) then they bolt on.
I have several questions: First, why didn't the machine shop reassemble the heads? Next, were the valve seats and valves reconditioned? Were the springs checked? Are you putting new valves and/or springs in?
I found using a deep socket the new oil seals go on very nicely. You probably will not have a sleeve in the retainer

they didnt putem back togehter cause i wasnt sure weather i was keepin them. now im gonna replace most the stuff and keepem. but mine have one other part that ur diagram doesnt show and i dont know what the heck it is. i got everry thing ur diagram shows, except the peice that has the locks in it is a ballbering typadeal. then theres another peice that has a collet in it and the locks fit in there to, and they both look the same except one isnt ballbearing
You have both rotators and retainers. The ones that rotate are called rotators and the ones that don't are called retainers. The spring used with a retainer is going to be longer than those used with a rotator. I assume either all the exhaust or intake valves had the rotators and the other had the retainers. That is how it was on my heads, but I just replaced the rotators with retainers so I could use the same length spring on all 16 valves.
Another thing is that if they ground the seats at all you might need different length valves.
