I just bought a 1984 f250 extended cab diesel. Its in Michigan and I am in WV. I am trying to liscense it but its hard without paying first(Can you trust anybody on Ebay?). I may be able to trailer it but I don't know the diemensions. Can anyone tell me? I think it weighs around 6500 pounds.
You'll need at least a 20 footer to haul it back and needs to be at least 6 feet wide. Make sure the trailer has adequate trailer brakes and can handle 7500lbs.+.
Need a twenty footer and a six foot wide trailer is about four inches too narrow. I know I found out the hard way. Your about right on the weight as my 85 ex-cab diesel weighed right around 6500
If the trailer's wheelwells are level with the bed of the trailer (on a 6' wide one), you shouldn't have a problem with the truck fitting, it will stay there, but if the trailer has wheelwells with a low bed, then you will need a 6.5 or 7'. U-Haul should have one you can fit that truck on if you don't already have a trailer.
I have not had trouble with e-bay purchases, but I always pay cash WHEN I pick up an expensive item. You have probably already done this, but if not.... check the rules for both states on vehilce transfers. Start at www.dmv.org Usually there is a "grace" peroiod. In Iowa, you can purchase a vehicle and have 30 days to register it. You also want to make sure the seller has a current registration ( in addition to a clean title.) If you rent a trailer, usually you have to rent their truck to pull the trailer with and it gets spendy.
If the seller has an excellent ebay rating with lots of transactions, and assuming this is a road worthy vehicle, I'd get a friend/spouse/etc, drive out, and drive it back!
and one more vote on that 6' trailer idea. I rented a tolly dolly for a local parts vehicle... truck was 76" and the dolly accepts up to 78". Six foot is TOO small unless you get over and can easily clear the trailer wheels.
I guess I got lucky! My insurance agent is also a liscense agent. He wrote me a temporary registration transfer from my other truck and is holding the paperwork till I get the truck! Now I am waiting for the seller to respond!
