I think it has somthing to do with the computer running it rich and the fact that the engine is cold, My '88 chev celebrity was like that, sounded totally different cold then it did when it was running closed loop.
Take it to a muffler shop and have them cut the exhaust right behind the manifolds about two inches behind the joint and couple a 2.5 inch pipe to that on each side and run just pipe past where the cats are and put a magnaflow 2.5 inlet and outlet cat back a few feet from the engine near where the muffler would go then add a straight thru design muffler on each side and go another foot and a half and put turndowns. Hook up some mil eliminators and your check engine light will stay off but you will still pass emissions. Very deep powerful sound and you can now get to a check your cats without that frame crossmember in the way.
My 96 5.8 does that to and all I have is cats an no muffler,when its cold it will pop and crackle when you let off and when it warm it makes almost no noise..
