First oil change

I am just about to 1,000 miles on my FX4. I have called four dealers in my area and got four different answers regarding the first oil change. One dealer said that the first oil change should be at 1,000 miles, another said at 1,500, another at 3,000 and another dealer told me to get it at 5,000 miles. I told each service tech that I do not do any towing and have not done any hauling yet. And I get four different answers. So I am turning to the real pros here to get the best answer (I hope). Thanks!

You will not get a straight answer here, trust me. Just like the dealers, everyone here has a different opinion. Just keep one thing in mind, it won't hurt to change the oil sooner than recommended, so you can pretty much do it whenever you want, before 5,000 that is. I did mine at 1,500 because it's a new engine.

I used to do the first oil change at 1000 miles on passed new cars but I'm going with the 3000 number this time (just passed 2000). The way I look at it, the oil breaks down mostly from heat so I don't see any reason that a new engine would break it down any faster than an older one would, probably less since I take it real easy on a new vehicle anyway. If the oil filter is any good at all, it should easily filter out any metal particles large enough to do any harm to the engine. The oil on the dipstick still looks fairly clear so I don't really see any reason to change it early. Just my take on the subject.

The answer is in your owners manual.

The owners manual suggests 5k for the first oil change I believe. And I have gotten totally different answers from four different Ford service techs. Just trying to find a more definative answer here. Thanks

I agree... after hearing several opinions voiced I am just gonna default to the manual and take it in at 5k for the free oil change. Seems easiest on my brain.

I did my first at 1100 miles and the second at 2900...being a machinist who built race engines...my observations have shown 1) No oil filter gets all the metal out of the oil..when you buy a new truck look very close at the dipstick after 1000 miles of driving...it looks like it has super fine metal flake. 2) Ford does not put "break-in oil from the factory. 3) The quicker you get the metal out the smoother and tighter the bearing and cylinder wall/piston skirt stays...scratches are forever...scratches are sources of blow by and leakdown....after 3500 to 4000 the metal is pretty much all gone..Ford puts a moly plasma coating on the piston skirts...the more left after break in...the less chances of cold start piston slap...the coating holds a film of oil until next start...a quieter engine for a lot longer...hope this helps

That makes sense to me and makes me then ask - why would Ford specify 5000 miles as the first oil change point?

Its a business...if they can have you need to buy a new truck after 150K thats great to them..but after spending almost 40K for this thing I want to wring every last mile out of it I can make it roll...I'm pretty meticulous and use all synthetic lubes and will be changing oil every 4500-5000 miles even with using the expensive stuff...My 92 F150 300ci 6cyl. went 383000 mil and still ran perfect. In that motor I used 15W-40 Amsoil Synthetic (called Gas and Diesel)...very good stuff
