I have a 2000 Ford Explorer. I seen some antifreeze on my driveway and my tank was a bit low. I filled them and started my truck. After about 7 minutes it started to leak a bit from the bottom of a box that is covered with a silver insulation that is sitting on the firewall right next to the blower motor. My question is do I have a heater core problem? I don't seem to have steamy defrost or antifreeze smell in the car. Is the heater core inside that black box covered with silver insulation or inside the fire wall?
Probably. Is it near where the heater hoses are connected to the heater core at the firewall? Is there a problem with the hoses or connections? These are other possibilities.
Also, as to the issue of no steam, unless you've veen using the heat you probably wouldn't see any steam / fuming. If you turn the heat on, do you smell the sweet smell of warm antifreeze?
No all the hoses look good. It is leaking at the box where all the A/C connections go into. It is antifreeze. It is a black plastic box covered with silver insulation bolted into the fire wall right next to the hoses from the heater core goes into the firewall. When the car gets heated it will start to leak. I also do not have the anitfreeze smell in the car nor do I have steam as I am in Michigan and we have 45 degree nights now and we use the heat on the way to work at 4:30 am.
Sorry to confirm your worries, but that definitely sounds like a heater core leak. The fact that it's not steaming may simply be indicative of a leak closer to the bottom of the core or in the tubing either before it has entered or after it has exited the heat transfer fins.
