Head unit/speaker configuration

Ok so I have a pioneer deh-P4300 head unit 200W (50x4) with 2 rockford fosgate mids for the front and 2 pioneer 240W (40RMS) 6x9 3ways in the rear in sealed enclosures. I get real good bass until I turn it up and then it pops and distorts pretty bad. are my speakers rated to low, head unit cant produce loud levels clean. what could be the problem. the speakers are not blown they sound great infact. I just cant turn the bass up and crank it. any info is appreciated. thanks
Shane

Here is a previous thread in which I contributed. It will answer your questions and also offers alot of good advice...

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=267320

I would also like to add that your head unit is in reality NOT putting out 200W (50Wx4), even though that is what it may say on the faceplate.

Quote from www.caraudiohelp.com...
"The number printed on the face of the receiver is usually a large exaggeration. Most receivers actually have between three and fifteen watts RMS per channel."

The most powerful head units that I know of are the Alpine 9833 and 9835 which puts out 26Wrms/ch (CEA 2006 compliant power rating).

Pioneer HU's almost always put out 22WX4 RMS. Kontai is very knowledgeable in this area, I'd highly suggest listening to him. I'd offer more advice, but he's already got it covered.

Another factor that contributes to what you describe is power supply limitations of a HU. It's all about current and voltage, and HU amps are not well suited to provide ample amounts when you play loud and long. That is precisely why there are dedicated separate amps that can provide what is needed when properly matched with the rest of the system. And, your speakers are NOT capable of true bass. They may be good for 50hz at low volume levels without distortion. They are more suited for midbass.

Excellent, thanks for the info. it actually makes sense. I think im gonna look at getting an amp and a sub and just run my 6x9's and tweeters on the front channel. I think that oughtta work. I am not looking for a super system. my truck is so noisy and rumbly that it drowns out any base on the road anyway. I just want good crisp solid sound. again thanks

That's what i've done.
Pioneer HU pushing the door and rear speakers.
Line out to the amp then mono to the 10" sub.

Sounds good. It'll drown out the road noise. I usually don't even here the cell phone ring.
