:-staun when i start my engine it surges and levels out then surges again and so on until i put it into gear and then it dies unless i hit the gas. after driving awhile and then shut it off ANd start again its ok in P. its just in the morning the heavy surging happens,

also in the morning sometimes i see steam from my vents and smell coolant through most of the day, do i have a bad heater core or a leak somewhere?

help is helpful, thanks!

The surging in the morning may be related to your Idle Air Controller. I dont know what engine you have, but on the 2.9L, the unit is tube-shaped, and bolted onto the passanger side of the intake manifold. It lies parallel to the manifold and has a wiring harness plugged into the butt of it.

To remove and clean the IAC:
(1) unplug the wiring from the back
(2) remove the 2 screws that hold the unit to the intake (careful not to loose or damage the gasket here)
(3) now that the IAC is free from the engine, remove the screws that hold the two halves together
(4) clean the inside of the tube!!!! The metal rod should push in and out freely and be free of crap. Use Gumout carb cleaner by spraying it inside the tube and scrubbing until it is shiny. Do the same for the metal rod and its seat.

Install the iac in the same way you removed it (once it is dry!!)

This should really help to smooth out your idle and at least prevent stalling on startup. If you want to be really sure, replace the air filter and clean out the trottle too (remove the thick air hose from the throttle and clean all deposits off the butterfly and mouth.

Good Luck!!

Evertime I have ever smelled coolant from the vents and my windows have steamed up bad, it has been the heater core. Easy replacement from under the passenger side dash. Get a good manual and you'll have no trouble...
