My push button 4 wheel drive console no longer activates the 4 wheel or low range. I have changed the module in the dash with no success. Any suggestions on where to trouble shoot next?
Thanks,
Railroad
Do the indicator lights on the buttons activate? What I'm getting at is whether the problem is simply a bad fuse or connection or whether the selenoids (if that is how they implement pushbutton 4WD) is suspect.
If there is no indication of activation at the button, then perhaps it is as simple as a blown fuse or disconnected wire.
Thanks Hawks, I tried to run down the problem a while back and checked the circuits then. I was not satisfied with the results and felt like I might have a loss of power somewhere. I did have some hot to the module. I was advised of a module test involving the module a micro switch and led,all located on the module. The test did not respond and I was able to locate a free module which had the same results. When the switches worked I recall hearing relays clicking, but cannot recall the location of the sound. Needless to say I do not have a manual. In my search, I was advised the actuator motor, located on the axle, is notorious for this problem. I am hesitant to just start throwing parts at the problem, hoping I get lucky. I am still searching, any help will be appreciated.
Thanks,

i would have someone lay on the ground near the back of the transfer case while you push the button im sure you must be able to hear it engage it really is a crappy system when you think about it its just an electric motor with brushes like a starter or alternater if the brushes are worn down then its not going to work tobe honest with ya when i got my 88 b2 it wouldnt engage right either i pulled that motor off stretched the springs that hold the brushes to the motor and it worked again i even had to do a Macgyverand pull apart a ball point pen for a spring cuz i lost one that went flying
but anyhow id start there and if you can hear it working then you know that its not the motor or the switch. i know not very technical but these old backyard tricks still work steve
In my travels of owning this push button POS....i learned that there is a sensor in the dashboard somewhere. Dont ask me where cause i cant find the damn thing. But i was told by a Bronco 2 tech that one exists...might be the prob
if memory serves me correct the scensor is located under an acces panel that is on the top of the dash and is removed by 2 phillips head screws near the right dash speaker
I had the same problem, but All I had to do was take the electric motor of the transfer case , hit the button a couple of times, and moved the **** that turns to put it in 4L, 4H and 2H manually and drove it for awile in each, put the motor back on, and now it works fine. I may just be gummed up like mine was.
I had trouble with my 86BII. Mine had the clicking sound as if it wanted to connect, but just didn't finish.
I took apart the motor on the transfer case. The motor was shot. I replace it with one I got from a junkyard.
Worked fine for a year.
This year it is intermittent. I have heard and read it is a good idea to engage once a month as they get gummed up. I figure I will take it apart again and take a look at it.
The control box is on the dash under a small rectangular panel as the previous guy mentioned. There is some type of reset on it. I do not know what it does.
Haynes manuals don't say much on the subject.
what seems to be a serious problem with the 4x4 system engaging, turns out to be quite simple. the system uses a electric motor to shift the system from 2wd to 4wd or low. the motor, when not being used for long periods of time, gums up around the contacts. the fix is to disassemble the the motor and clean the contacts. There is a site called "rangerland" it has pics of the procedure. you will lose the springs, it happens, use the spring out of a pen..works great...cut it down a little to fit. i would skip everything and go straight to this.
