Engine stays running

I have a 1977 f-100 300 i6 3 on the tree and it runns so good it wants to run after i turn key off it doesnt run for long it realy just spits and sputers for about 10 seconds. if any body noes whats goin on any help would be appriciated

Lean out the idle & & air/fuel circuits on the carb.
The timing may need adjusting as well.

What is your idle speed? Should be less than 1000 RPM. You want it in the 600-800 RPM range. If the idle is set too high, the engine will "diesel" or run-on as you are describing.

That used to happen to me in my 79. Turned out that the timing was set to 0 BTDC. Set it to 8 BTDC and havent had it happen since.
