Ok, I've been on this board for awhile now (mostly in the 67-72 forum) and I've posted this question here and in the 67-72 forum and seen others post on the same topic with two different answers. I have a '71 F250 4x4 that I want to put a C6 in with a col. shift from a '73-77 F250. My question is, are the columns (not the steering shaft) the same for 4x4 and 4x2 for those years? Please only answer if you are certain. I believe they are the same, so if you think they are not, please explain the differences.
Thanks!
the only difference between 4x4 and 4x2 colums, is the end of the shaft has a steele flange welded on for 4x2 trucks. this can be cut of, and machine shop splined, to work on 4x4's. that is the ONLY difference. i have a 4x4 column, and a 4x2 column. they are identicle. same goes for floor shift columns.
Are you sure ? I don't think that steel flange is welded on. All the ones that I have seen have a 12 point bolt with a 7/16" or 11mm head, holding it on
Ok, thanks. Yeah I know, but I don't like the plastic housing on the '78 and later cols. I like the steel bullet shaped fairing used on the earlier models. Plus, I'd never use the tilt feature. I have plenty of room without a tilt now thanks to my boyish figure!

I made a good column from 2 (non-tilt) to replace my '73 2wd manual trans column and found that the outside column/housing is the same for 2wd and 4x4. I used columns from a '77 4x4 manual trans and '78 2wd auto. Both 2wd columns had the lower flange welded to the shaft and the 4x4 had the removable knuckle with the 7/16 nut holding it on. I was under the impression that only the 2wd tilt columns had the removable flange...

yep, i have one right now, i can take a picture of it. i know what you mean that it is bolted on, i've seen both. i''ll have to look, but i think, my auto trans column for a 78 has it bolted on. my manual trans column for a 77 has it welded on. i'll take pics and put them in my gallery when i get a chance later today.
