I think you need to "work" doing something you like and that way you will enjoy life...
here is a quote from a speach I once heard...
“THE ONLY QUESTION YOU HAVE TO ASK IS…
DO I WANT TO?
BECAUSE WHO CARES IF YOU CAN. AT LEAST YOU GET TO DO WHAT YOU WANT;
AND SURE YOU MIGHT FAIL A WHOLE BUNCH. BUT EVERY DAY IS SPENT FAILING
TRYING SOMETHING YOU WANT TO DO. ISN’T THAT GREAT? AT LEAST YOU ARE
NOT SPENDING EVERYDAY SUCCEEDING AT SOMETHING YOU DON’T WANT TO DO.”
Any job that pays the bills will work. I was always told growing up to work hard and you can advance in the company. Well I worked hard and sure enough I advanced until now I am the Plant Engineer for a fortune 500 company. What did I get, well the more I advanced they put more work load on me and I received more responsibility's, oh yeah now instead of getting myself in trouble at work I have 52 people below me getting me in trouble. I also received the honor of being hospitalized 3 times from work related incidents. But after all that I like my job and wouldn't trade it for anything. So really the thing is that almost any job will do but if you really like what you do it is better in the long run. As far as getting rich, well I am very rich myself but not from working and making lots of money I am rich because I have a wonderful family and a whole bunch of great friends. That is real wealth!!!
i dont like my job, i do it without complaining and i do it well, but i hate driving a truck, some people love it and do it for their whole lives, i been doing it now for 14 years and i hate it, the smell of diesel fuel turns my stomach, bouncing down the road plays hell with my kidneys, i no longer have the six pack of my youth, now it seems i am carrying a keg. my job makes me tired makes me sleep terrible even when i am home and has totalty ruined the chance of having a social life. but you know what else it does ? it pays the bills and leaves some extra money from time to time. it is paying the mortage on the house and has bought a car a mini van and many many pieces for my truck. it puts good shoes and clean clothes on my kids and it keeps my family going. other then that i still play the powerball two times a week just dreaming of the day i can climb out of that semi forever...
Truck driver for 14yrs and you hate it...How long have you hated it? Try something different that will use your experience.
Some examples...
A moving company, almost the same but you won't have all the long hours on the road and you will probably meet new people.
A bus driver
A Cement truck driver
Just some ideas...it could open up new doors or new bussiness relations that will help you out in the long run...
Granted you will lose your benefits with your current employer but you got to remember you only live once, and time flies regardless if you are having fun or not so enjoy it while you can...
Figure out how to get someone to pay you to do what you love.
After I ruled out all the illegal stuff, I settled on CAD design. I can set my own rates and hours. Like the old addage, speed is just a question of money, how fast do you want to go? Money is just a question of effort, how rich do you want to be?
i have tried all different trucking jobs, i drove locally, i drove long haul i have done flatbed van refer oversize, all of it. i just hate trucking in general. i do it for the money, thats the only reason. i am a college grad. i have a bach. in nuclear physics, i used to work at San Onofre Nuclear power plant as a engineer. ( got laid off in 1988 - replaced by a computer ) then i was a lumberjack in washington state, my major in school was teaching and music comp-theory. i taught for awhile but couldnt handle teaching kids, they just dont learn fast enough for me. i still teach private lessons though to the neighborhood kids. someone on here i forgot who now sent me a guitar awhile back for the kids, rest assured they love it . I cant do the things i love for a job, it doesnt pay enough and it isnt like i am underdeveloped in my mind. i made the deans list every year and finished out with a 3.74 grade point average. i just do what i do to support my family. granted if i could turn back time i would have taken that job at General Electric when i got laid off from the plant, or taken that job being a police officer after i passed there test. i am not unhappy with my life or job so to speak, i just hate it but i still do it with a smile because i know on payday the bills get paid and the kids get snacks and the wife smiles

I think your father was a very wise man. I had an uncle who was the happiest, most contented man I ever knew. He was an expert on the applications of hydraulics and held high paying jobs in that field. He quit that job, went back to Arkansas, bought nine acres and became the custodian at a school (the kids loved him). He enjoyed his garden and working in his shop. He raised his family, paid his bills and enjoyed every day of his life. He tought me that happiness is a state of mind in no way proportional to the size of your bank account. Having said that, if you can do what you love to do AND make money ... doesn't come much better than that.

Sometimes what it pays isn't worth it, my current job doesn't pay all that well. It has plenty of downsides, for most people.
But I love doing it. I've been a Line Mechanic ($36 to 40K p year)
An Electrician, industrial and construction (About the same)
Even owned my own business, managed two others. ($30 -35K year)
And I found I hated every minute of it, so, now I work in the boat business, which is the epitome of the old saw about making a small fortune, if you start with a big one.
And I love it. I honestly believe that liking what you do is more important than how much it pays.
My ultimate goal would be to setup some kind of "custom" boat works marina. Of course, that would happen only if the skys parted and the stars were in alignment and I could get off this forum to study somemore
I agree about making what you like to do into an income generating . . . something But the things I like to do COST me money, how do I make them MAKE me money?
For full time employment, you can expect $15 to $20 per hour, more if you offer the company additional skills. Freelance, $20 to $25, but I usually quote a total "not to exceed" amount then fly through the job.
