Exclamation Excursion PSD - California Emissions

I recently had trouble with my 2000 Excursion. The Check Engine Light came on. I had the code read at the auto parts store and found out the problem (CODE P0683 - Glow plug diagnostic signal communication fault). Based on the code, one might think that there was a loose connection or open circuit. One might think this since the Ford Service Bulletin (99-25-10) said so. I did not have any problems with cold starts that would indicate the unit was bad as it was only getting down to about 60 deg. F at night.

Anyway, since I did not feel like troubleshooting the problem I took it to a local dealership. The service department charged me $100 to diagnose that the Glow Plug Module / Relay was bad. What I didn’t know at the time was that since my vehicle is equipped with California Emissions, it does not have relay ($77), it has a Glow Plug Control Module ($170). [the long story related to parts department will be skipped]

Anyway, the dealership told me they wanted $360 to replace the part. I replaced it myself. It took about an hour. The most difficult step was removing the nut from the bracket since it was blocked by one of the pipes going to the turbo. The vehicle is starting fine now.

They say hindsight is always 20 / 20. So, here’s the hindsight:

I should have just replaced the glow plug control module on my own. That would have saved me over $100. Shortly after I purchased the vehicle the module (again hindsight here) was replaced under warranty. I didn’t really think about it since there was a problem and it was repaired under warranty).

Question for anyone that has an PSD with California Emissions, is the Glow Plug Control Module prone to failure? The vehicle had 64k on it when I purchased it. The GPCM failed at 70k and again at 100k.
