Excursion PSD - California Emissions
Anyway, since I did not feel like troubleshooting the problem I took it to a local dealership. The service department charged me $100 to diagnose that the Glow Plug Module / Relay was bad. What I didn’t know at the time was that since my vehicle is equipped with California Emissions, it does not have relay ($77), it has a Glow Plug Control Module ($170). [the long story related to parts department will be skipped]
Anyway, the dealership told me they wanted $360 to replace the part. I replaced it myself. It took about an hour. The most difficult step was removing the nut from the bracket since it was blocked by one of the pipes going to the turbo. The vehicle is starting fine now.
They say hindsight is always 20 / 20. So, here’s the hindsight:
I should have just replaced the glow plug control module on my own. That would have saved me over $100. Shortly after I purchased the vehicle the module (again hindsight here) was replaced under warranty. I didn’t really think about it since there was a problem and it was repaired under warranty).
Question for anyone that has an PSD with California Emissions, is the Glow Plug Control Module prone to failure? The vehicle had 64k on it when I purchased it. The GPCM failed at 70k and again at 100k.
