trans slip?
Sometimes when I'm driving 20-35mph, light throttle, the 2-3 shift is very lazy and will allow an rpm increase before finally settling into 3rd gear. This ONLY happens when the trans is up to temp and at very light - part throttle. 1/2 - full throttle upshifts are very firm and stout, like a good automatic should behave....but the "around town" slip has me puzzled....is there a band needing looking at? All the other gears shift normally at the same throttle opening.

Slipping Transmissions are a sign a rebuild is forthcoming. It sounds like a servo or maybe a valve body problem. The possibility of a modulator also comes to mind, but servos and valve body require internal transmission pan. better to rebuild then guess..

Yes, fluid and filter change last Winter. Fluid was very clean, red color with no wierd odor....filter was clean as well.
OK then, I'll cross my fingers and switch out the modulator and it's hose

Watch out for that little pin when you pull the modulator off. Lots of people here on the forum, yours truly included, lost that pin and ended up crawling around the garage on all four sniffing the ground looking for that stupid thingy
