ATF in manual tranny

Doing the clutch in my I6 4 speed SROD, I noticed the tranny had ATF in it. It's always been a noisy tranny, and I've only checked for fluid level in the past. When I called the parts dept at my local Ford dealer I was told this was correct, ATF for this tranny. Still it puzzles me, looking for a 2nd opinion.

Thanks for the replies, BTW it's an 82.
My Haynes manual says 80w gear lube, don't have an owners manual. Reseaching this, it seems ATF if fine but I'd be happy with 80W if it would quiten it down.
On the Alldata website showing Technical Service Bulletins for 1983 Ford Truck F 150 I found:
187. 832116 OCT 83 M/t - SROD, ATF Usage Recommendation
