Funny engine noise
I am somewhat mechanically inclined, but not as much as I should be. Here goes my problem. 2 weeks ago, I ran out of gas on the interstate. I filled it back up and while driving tot he station, I noticed the engine [2.9] was making more noise than usual. The engine now sounds kind of like a sewing machine. [valves?] The sound gets faster as revs inclease. Is this going to be a problem? I drove it over 350 miles last weekend without an problem. I don't think I have lost any power, it seems to accelerate the same. Gas milage has gone down a bit, but then again, it has been somewhat windy lately. Any input would be greatly desired as I am planning a 1000 mile trip this weekend.
Mileage on the Oil and Filter.
Perhaps a compression test is in order?

Check have the valve clearance's checked.

Would running out of gas cause things like this to go outta whack?
