Question Struts???

OK, this is a question from an automotive dummy. I know what shocks are. I'm not sure what struts are. If I get new shocks do I need new struts? Do shocks come with struts? Help!!!

Your car or truck has either struts or shocks but usually not both. By that I mean either the front is strut or shock and/or the rear is strut or shock. Struts incorporate the whole spring and hydraulic dampener in one unit whereas shocks are just the hydraulic dampener. To replace a strut requires compressing the spring plus detaching various parts of the front end from the strut, upper mount, lower mount, stabilizer, etc., whereas shocks require just disconnecting two points of attachment, the upper and lower mounting bolts.

John, thank you. That's a clear and understandable description. I always worried that if I went to change shocks, I wouldn't know if the guy was snowing me or not. I assume that if I look under my truck and see simple 2-point shocks that there are no struts? From your description, struts would have to look quite different and attach differently. Sound right? Thanks again. Bill.
