I have an '89 BII EB w/ 142XXX. This evening, I was driving on the interstate at 65mph and the engine died on me. No sputtering, no warning, just died. After about 5 minutes of sitting, it started back up and I was able to drive off, but it died again 5 mins later and would not start back up. I have had problems in the past where the fuel pump wouldn't engage and after waiting about 5 minutes, it would run and start fine. Now, when I turn the key, there is silence, no pump sound. I have checked the shut-off switch and it is no the problem. Is this a fuel pump problem or some sort of relay problem? I don't know where the fuel pump is, but it seems like it may be in the tank. I hope it isn't because the tank is full right now and I know what a bi!@# it is to drop and put back up. Please, any imput would be great.
There are two fuel pumps, one in the tank and one behind a stone shield under the driver's seat inside the frame rail. It is possible the fuel pump went, when they fail it is usually because the wire connector rusted away, not from the pump (Bosch) itself failing. A bad fuel pump relay (located under hood on the pass. fender wall) is possible.
Driving, dying, driving, dying, points to a TFI module problem.
