And nobody has said a thing. Do any of our members live in the affected areas? I've found a url to numerous pic. The poor place looks like a war zone. I hope everyone is doing ok and that things are getting back to normal, although it looks like it's going to be a long recovery.
How the HECK are they gonna get all the sand off that area? I mean, it seems as though that place will NEVER be the same again. I saw one news report a day or two after it happened, and there was easily 2 feet of sand built up around some areas.
I live and work in the Birmingham area. We didn't have it too bad here. Mostly a few downed trees and some localized (but significant) flash flooding from all the rain. At the peak, about 1 million state-wide without power.
Some of the folks I work with live along the Gulf coast. It is quite a mess down there. In addition to the expected issues of power, phone and water service, gas is a rare commodity. Stations either have no power, or the station is no longer there.
I have spent many weekends in the Alabama Gulf Shores and Orange Beach area. Seeing the pics of that place is amazing.
The new high-rise, concrete/steel condos faired pretty well. The older style stick-built structures, well, Ivan appears to have won many of those battles!
I just got off the phone with one of my co-workers in Pensacola. He told me the guy driving the truck on the I-10 bridge has been found dead. Based on what he has heard/read it appears the fellow was a Mexican with little more being reported. Apparently he was on the bridge during the height of the storm. My friend has heard no reason given for his presence in that place at that time.
It is scary to imagine what his last few minutes must have been like. I'd imagine he had a little time to realize that he was in one serious mess.
Sad.
Yeah, everyone should get on the www.pensacolanewsjournal.com website and see just about how lucky they are- if they were not effected. I personally am going to go down to help clean up in a week or so, as soon as I can find a slide -in camper to stay in. In the past I lived in Pensacola and my ex was from Gulfshores, Alabama- the two worst places hit. Both places were very beautiful and the people were real great when I was there. I encourage anyone to help in anyway they can, perhaps contact the paper itself and see how they can be of help, or the red cross which is also on that website. Personally my grandparents lost everything in the KansasCity flood of 51' and my uncle just lost everything in the Richmond ,VA flood. I have seen the effects it has on people, I feel it is the least I can do. PLEASE Visit the website - and do what you can.
Ivan was felt all the way up here too. We've had severe floods, the creeks and the Susquehanna were up way above flood stage. Some towns in a state of emergency and several evacuated. Roads collapsed, bridges underwater, power out, houses washed out. It has been unreal.
I just can't imagine, if it's this bad up here, what the people down south are going through. I think we lucked out compared to them.
Hey 2Bowers, I live right across from the fair grounds along fishing creek and I finally just got in my house Yesterday. I had water up to my windows on the first floor. About 6 feet! Just moved in a few months ago. What a house present. Still, I consider myself very lucky compared to the people down south. At least I could come home.
Are you on the Fernville/West Main side? We drove by there, what a mess. People were paddling boats around the fairgrounds and the parking lot was a lake. We had been looking at a house on the creek there but it would have been flooded for sure. Glad you're OK though, that's what's important! (Also glad to see an FTE-er in the area. Still going to the fair?)
My wife and I live in Mobile,Al and only had some fence sections blown down and our pool is green now..We were nervous for awhile cuz we were at work in pascagoula,ms and expected storm up the state line but it turned.Mostly mobile was blown down trees.poor guy around corner had a new sport trac with 8 miles on it destroyed by fallen tree.my partners gf lives in pcola and her apartment was heavily damaged and hosp she worked at was damaged pretty bad.We got power back yesterday finally,at least ins replaced food in the fridge. One of our ambulance stations has a tree on it.those folks will be at for a long time recovering.pray for the folks and give to the red cross as they are organizing most help.
