Hi, I am looking to add some more power to my 1990 351 W. I thought maybe a chip would be next since they usually do not cost that much. Any idea what chips would be best for my truck? Thsi site mentions my year just not sure about the whole "petrol" thing.... Any other info would be great. Thanks.
The first one you found is from Austrailia! Check out www.motorhaven.com They will have all of the chips you will need. I only saw tuners on that second site, and not a chip. Check out FTE's Computer Tuning forum, just a few below the Big Bronco forum. The Diablo chip is what you will want to get for the bronco.
chips are a waste until you mod your motor first with headers, exhaust an filter . those chips also make you run premium fuel. the chip may be cheap but think what you spend in gas so it works properly.
your the guy running the 39's on stock gears right. if so then your best to wait till you get the gears swapped out to see how it performs then. i would almost bet that you wouldnt even need the chip then. Get the gears first. its just a matter of time before your tranny and other vital parts start to fail running that setup. now if this isnt you then go for it.
no no. the stock gears running that large of a tire puts 10x more strain on the motor, tranny and axles and such becuase every thing must work harder to move your rig. if you spend the money on gears first then it would put back to if you had been running a stock tire with stock gearing. does that make sense. so then the motor, tranny and other drivetrain parts aren't getting stressed
Oh ok... Thanks! I just took it wrong. The only prob is I need to replace front too and it needs what you guys call a bigger pumpkin. How much do those cost? Anything else I need? I'll start saving so I can atleast get the rear done soon. Thanks.
not a bigger pumpkin but a bigger carrier. the carrier sits inside of the pumpkin. if you just get the rear done you will need to remove your front drive shaft this will keep you from accidently putting it into 4x4.
I plan to do them both, but I probaly could only afford one at a time so I figured I could do one to spare my tranny and just rememebr not to use 4x4. Unless its cheaper than I expect then I'll do them both at once. Thanks for help.
I agree with the guy above. Go for gears first! The problem is that you're running 39 inch tires, if you put a gear set in any lower than 4.88 in your front axle (which is a Dana 44) it is gonna make it really weak. And ideally you would want to put at least a 5.13:1 gear set to get closer to your original power.
The "pumpkin" is a slang term for the differential housing on your axle. Inside the "pumpkin" or differential housing is the gear set. Now you probably have a 3.55:1 gear set in your 90 Bronco stock. With the Dana 44 front end if you go any lower than 4.10:1 you have to get a new carrier for the gears (the carrier is inside the "pumpkin" or differential housing). Once you get a new carrier for the gears you can "safely" go to a 4.56:1 gear set but that would still not be low enough to compensate for your large tires and get you back to the equivalent of your original ratio. As a compromise, you could go for the 4.56:1 ratio, but it will be not cheap and is not an easy task to try on your own unless you really know your way around working on cars/trucks and have the right tools. If you were into off-roading and wanted to do it right you would buy a Dana 60 sold front axle and do a solid axle swap. Your truck would be WAY WAY better off road, your front end would a LOT stronger and you could go to 5.13:1 gears or lower...but expensive. Realistically, I would I would get new 4:56 gears front and rear with a locker in back and a limited slip in front while you're putting gears in anyway. Let me us know what you decide on. Alex
Sorry... I am lost again.Let me see if I got it... A new carrier for front will hold 5.13 but it will be weak? I dont want it to be weak but I know those are exspensive.... I'd really like to go with 5.13 not 4.56's.... Any cheaper ways to fix this? I may just end up with a 2 wheel drive bronco for a while....
