Question - I used my T-Tech flush machine to do my 99 Taurus tranny - which uses Merc V. Now if I want to use it to flush my 98 Expy tranny, which uses Mercon...what will happen if a minute amout (residual) found its way into the Expy's tranny? Is such a small amount anything to worry about or would I be headed for serious trouble?
If there's the slightest chance of cross-contamination and impending failure, I'll do a manual drain/fill on my tranny & torque converter...but that T-Tech sure makes a quick job out of it and I'd hate to not be able to use it.
Scott, don't worry too much about the cross contamination. In fact if you do a search on trannies, you'll see that Ford was even refilling trannies with Mercon V that specifically called for Mercon.
I agree with Buzzard but just don't take his response to mean that you can refill with Mercon V. Refill with Mercon and if a minute amount of Mercon V is in the machine,,,,no problem.
Thanks for the replies - I was hoping the small amount of Merc V wouldn't be a problem...I'm pretty sure there would be no more than an ounce or two (if that). Actually, it's Pennzoil multi-vehicle ATF.
I find this whole issue a little curious - the Pennzoil is a "multi-vehicle ATF" that is supposed to meet the requirements of Merc and Merc V...how can that be?
I flushed my 99 Taurus wagon's tranny with it and it is responding EXCELLENT! But it calls for Merc V to begin with. How can this fluid work in a tranny that is only supposed to have Mercon?

Good catch. I, in no way meant to imply that Mercon V was an acceptable replacement, just a few drops wouldn't hurt.
I do not know which tranny you have in your Expy but I know that in the F350 PSD with a 4R100 tranny the engineer involved with the testing of that tranny said not to use dual rated fluids but straight Mercon. Sooooo I used Mobil 1 ATF which is synthetic Mercon rated fluid. Pricey but things can heat up towing heavy.
Man, that's a whole other can of worms....I have no idea. I just stick to what Ford says.
Yeah, it's got me stumped too...don't know how (after reading all the posts about not putting Mercon V where Mercon is required) Pennzoil can produce something that satisfies the requirements of both.

haul_n_horses2,
Thanks!
I will use straight Mercon (mine's also a 4R100 from what I've read on this forum - 98 EB 4x4 with 5.4)...haven't decided on which brand but will only use Mercon.
