98 F150 automatic with a 4.6L. My truck just started not engaging into reverse. You have to rev up the engine a little bit and play around with drive and reverse before it engages. Really sucks. Tranny fluid appears to be fine, maybe a cup low. Not much at all. I was wondering what everybody thought about this. I heard ford had problems with their trannys. Is this true? I need some help!!! Thanks
Is it that the only problem? Once it gets in gear does it shift normally? Could it be the brake safety switch (not sure what it's called), it keeps the the tranny from being shifted into R without pressing the brake. Just an idea.
Once in reverse, does it back up ok? Do you have good gears going forward? Do you have a flashing light on the gear shift handle? Have a parts store pull the codes for you and let us know what, if any a stored.
I have never heard of that brake switch thing where you have to have your foot on the break. When it finally gets to reverse it works fine. No problems in any of the other gears. Where is this break safety switch located???

So when you shift into R you never put your foot on the brake first? That doesn't sound right, that's been standard on just about all cars/trucks for many years. The switch should be directly behind the brake pedal assembly. Hope that's the problem and not something more serious.
